Executive Recruitment

Welcome from Huw Bowen, Chief Executive of Chesterfield Borough Council

Dear Candidate

Thank you for your interest in this role at Chesterfield Borough Council.

Chesterfield has a good reputation in local government as a council that punches above its weight in terms of the quality of services we deliver and particularly our track record in delivering inclusive economic growth through working in partnership with investors, developers and local enterprise partnerships.

We are a council and borough with big ambitions and nationally significant regeneration schemes. Our £1 billion programme includes our own Northern Gateway development. We are a partner in the £340m Chesterfield Waterside scheme and currently exploring the feasibility of co-investing in the £400m Peak Resort project.

The council is also ambitious to deliver good quality services as well as new initiatives to ensure that Chesterfield continues to be a great place to live, work and visit; and to ensure that we can deliver the council vision of 'Putting our communities first' – we want to ensure our residents share in the benefits of Chesterfield’s success and enjoy healthy and active lives; and our businesses reach their full potential. That’s why our Council Plan and our collective efforts are focused on:

  • Making Chesterfield a thriving borough
  • Improving the quality of life for local people
  • Providing value for money services

The council has responsibility for managing and maintaining 9000 council houses, this includes; supporting our tenants and housing estate environments, using our in-house repairs and maintenance teams to keep the properties in good repair and ensuring we have with a significant capital programme for modernisation of our housing stock and new build housing. As part of this delivery we also provide internal stores and fleet management services.

The council also has key statutory housing responsibilities including homelessness services, private sector housing and Careline services.

These services are all managed within our Housing Directorate. A significant amount of transformation activity is underway, with new staffing structures, cultural development and digital innovation targeted as part of our drive for continuous improvement, but with the requirements of the regulator of social housing and the building safety legislation firmly in mind.

The Service Director – Housing will also play a key role within our Corporate Leadership Team alongside five other Service Directors, the Chief Executive, two Executive Directors and the Monitoring Officer.

We are looking for candidates with a strong and demonstrable track record of achievement in respect of strategic and operational outcomes, the stature and capability to manage within a complex political and stakeholder environment, commercial acumen and the ability to build momentum and maintain pace in the face of conflicting and competing priorities and challenges.

If you share our passion and ambition, we look forward to hearing from you.
